Our Heritage

Founded in 1895, Woodstock Country Club is the oldest public golf course in Vermont. The history of golf in Woodstock is steep, and the story on how it was founded and how it evolved is unique in many ways. Today, golf is thriving in our hills, and the course is playing better than it ever has and continues to get recognized as a top resort course.

1895 - Golf is Introduced to Woodstock
Dr. Francis B Harrington was visiting from Boston, MA in early October for a two week stay with his golf clubs and balls to find out there was not a golf course in site. He aroused the interest of general manager Arthur Wilder and the two headed out to the open crown of Mount Peg where Dr. Harrington demonstrated his golf techniques. There was an immediate interest and the town of Woodstock has enjoyed golf ever since.
1896 - Woodstock Country Club Opens
On April 26, Woodstock Country Club opened its greens on a hillside cow pasture located above the present golf course. The inaugural season was celebrated four months later with the first 9-hole tournament on the newly minted links for club members.
1906 - A Change of Venue
With the Woodstock golf course quickly growing in popularity, club professional and forefather of golf course design William Henry Tucker was hired to configure an entirely new layout that opened in July 1906. The new course was moved to the Kedron Valley, just below Mt. Peg, where it remains today.
1925 - Woodstock Country Club’s Expansion
Due to increases in membership, golf architect Wayne Stiles, of Boston, Massachusetts, was hired to rearrange Woodstock’s links and create a new 18-hole layout, setting the foundation for today’s modern style of golfing. By the end of his career, the relatively unknown landscape architect was credited for designing and consulting on over 145 golf courses throughout his life.
1950 - Golf Boom
The golf boom of the early 1950s put the club in a good financial situation. In 1954 the women organized their own association and started planning ladies’ day and played in tournaments. Their excellent management of social affairs of the club included four major dinner and dance events each year, providing extra funds to paint the clubhouse and remodel the ballroom.
1963 - Laurance Rockefeller’s Influence on the Course
Two years after Laurance Rockefeller purchased Woodstock Inn & Resort in 1961. Mr. Rockefeller hired renowned golf course architect Robert Trent Jones, Sr. who brought his signature, yet complex designs to Woodstock’s greens. Because the course’s acreage was too small for a full-length design, Jones compensated by utilizing the tall banks and twisted paths of Kedron Brook to add technical challenges.
2012 - Keegan Bradley Hosts Charity Golf Tournament
After Tropical Storm Irene devastated much of Vermont with flooding, Woodstock native and PGA Tour champion Keegan Bradley hosted a golf tournament at the Woodstock Country Club to help raise funds to assist the state in recovery. The Keegan Bradley Charity Golf Classic ran as an annual Woodstock tournament for many years, benefiting the Pediatric Cancer Research Foundation in its support of the Vermont Cancer Center and Vermont Children's Hospital to fund life-saving research for children battling cancer.
