Golf at the Woodstock Country Club has teed off into another beautiful season! Our grounds crew has the course looking fantastic and the Golf Shop is stocked with your favorite brands. 18-holes of championship play that winds along the scenic Kedron Brook and the base of Mt. Peg makes for a challenging and gorgeous day on the links. Book a lesson with our PGA Pro, Matt Closter, to get back into the swing after a winter off or receive pointers for the technical course (like the dogleg over the brook on hole 3). A favorite lunch spot for golfers and non-players alike, the Fairway Grill overlooks the course and invites you to cool off with a local brew and an alfresco bite after your round.
Q&A With Shay
Get to know our Orvis Endorsed Fly-Fishing Program with Lead Fly-Fishing Guide, Shay Berry.
Q: For someone who has never tried fly fishing before, what is the best way to be introduced to the sport and get the most from the experience?
A: I think a good mix of dry land to learn the fundamentals and then get in boots and waders, get knee-deep in the water, and take what you’ve learned and apply it, is the best approach. That is why, with direction from Orvis, we created our Educational Excursion.
Q: What is your favorite place to take an experienced guest fly fishing?
A: I think experienced fly-fishermen like to catch wild fish. For this, we would head to the Upper White River or deep in the forest to fish small streams. Shhhh, those spots are a secret.
Q: You’re our Lead Fly-Fishing Guide, but we have a whole team. Who are the other Orvis Endorsed Guides that our guests may get to learn from?
A: We have a great team of guides and staff in our shop. Many have years of experience fishing our local waters and guiding guests, and they all have a passion for not only fly-fishing but also educating others about the importance of the conservation of Vermont's fisheries. Meet the team!
Shay Berry, Lead Guide - Year 7, Brian Burkholder - Year 4, Mike O’Neil - Year 4, Shawn Hannux - Year 3, Noah Phipps - Year 3, Samantha Aronson - Year 2, Andrew Borden - Year 2, Gregg Maddock - Year 2, Mica McGinley-Smith - Year 2, Owen Ward - Year 2, Colin MacMillan, Fly Shop & Activity Center Team - Year 1
Q: What is your favorite piece of Orvis Fly-Fishing Equipment that you’re using this season?
A: I casted our Helios 4F Fly Rod in our Fly-Fishing Shop for about a year and then I had to have it. I’ve been fishing the Helios 3 4F this spring and it is the best rod I’ve ever owned. The perfect combination of flexibility, accuracy, and strength.
Q: Sometimes the fish just aren’t biting, why is the experience still worth it even if you don’t get a catch?
A: We work very hard at Education and Conservation. Our guides are teachers first and foremost and they will educate our guests that it’s about the total experience. It’s about being in the water and figuring out what the fish are feeding on, being submerged in the scenery and enjoying nature and the outdoors. There are many variables that we can’t control like weather, water flows, feeding patterns, and time of year. When a guests land a fish, that’s just the confirmation that you did it all right. The right time, the right place, the right fly, and the right cast! It all comes together! Fly-fishing is a journey that will take you to many great places that often starts right here in Woodstock, VT at the Woodstock Inn & Resort.
